As the world has entered a period of global instability, the prospect of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan is not only a possibility but a very close reality. China has repeatedly recited its rhetoric that Taiwan is a part of China and has made it clear that it aims for a reunification of what China says is its territory.

In the face of an almost inevitable conflict, the question arises, will the US directly support its strategic ally in the region? US President Joe Biden when recently asked whether or not US troops would defend Taiwan, he replied ” Yes, if in fact there was an unprecedented attack”. However shortly after this statement by the President, national security advisor Jake Sullivan stated in a press conference that Biden’s remarks on the matter wasn’t to be taken as policy change, adhering to the agreement of the one China policy.

Although a clear competitive rivalry has been steadily growing for decades between China and the US, its refutable to say that these two economic and military powerhouses don’t share a symbiosis in terms of trade, industry and technology sectors. It would be consequential for either country to openly engage in a full fledged military conflict, where the ramifications would be catastrophic on a global scale.

This makes it unlikely that the US would directly support Taiwan in such a scenario, however heavy US military and economic assistance has been given to Taiwan for decades to bolster them against China’s emergence as a major threat to US dominance in the region. Taiwan being a key ally may not be enough for the US to justify a costly defense in the event of a Chinese invasion.

Many thought the war in Ukraine which started earlier this year would be over by now, however almost eight months later there seems to be no end in sight. The war which started on Feb 24th as Russia invaded Ukraine in what Vladimir Putin described as a “special military operation” has progressed into what is looked to be a prolonged European conflict, the size of which has not been seen since World War 2.

Although the outlook of the initial invasion looked bleak for the Ukrainian defense forces, heavy support economically and militarily specifically from western countries has helped Ukraine greatly in the face of Russia’s numerical and technological advantage. Peace talks have to this point been futile in stopping the war as each side refuses to give in to each others demands. This has escalated recently due to Russia’s “referendums” which has essentially annexed 15% of Ukrainian territory.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently announced that he will not negotiate with Moscow until Putin is no longer President. With neither side refusing to back down, this conflict could very well turn into a continuous war for years to come and with recent events unfolding such as the sabotage of the Nord stream pipelines, Russia’s 300,000 military mobilization and even the alleged acquisition of Iranian drones by Russia’s armed forces, the risk of a global conflict could be a very real possibility.

Russia has recently asserted its position as a nuclear power with Vladimir Putin stating Russia would use “all means available” to defend Russian territory sparking fears that such a conflict, which Moscow believes is “unacceptable” is not completely off the table the longer this war continues.

The post How long will the war in Ukraine last? first appeared on DefenceHub.

Both the Kh-22 and Tupolev Tu-22M are considered obsolete. The Kh-22 boasts impressive range (600km), speed and payload. Though its poor accuracy limits is effectiveness. Weapons with low, or no guidance aren’t just ineffective, they also pose a greater danger to non-combatants.

The post Four people injured after Russian Kh-22 missiles hit Odesa first appeared on DefenceHub.

It is yet unknown if the it is in response to an attack, or if signifies the beginning of a new operation. Ankara’s economy has been strangled partially due to hosting the worlds largest refugee population, many of which are from Syria, and refuse to return to areas under Assad or PKK’s control.

Now, these clashes have been confirmed, with 1 Azerbaijani and 4 Armenian troops losing their lives so far. Leaked footage shows a strike on an Armenian position.

Azerbaijan and Armenia clashed in late 2020, resulting in a decisive Azerbaijani victory. It ended decades of Armenian occupation in Nagorno-Karabakh. Known as the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, it was part of the three drone wars of 2020. Footage released from Karabakh, Syria and Libya changed warfare forever, as Turkish-made TB2 UCAVs annihilated conventional forces.

Lithuania launched a fundraising campaign to buy a TB2 drone for Ukraine. In a surprise twist, Baykar has instead decided to transfer it for free.

The €6 million raised will be dedicated to general support for Ukraine and ammunition for the TB2. This will most likely consist of MAM-L and MAM-C micro munitions. The MAM-C can target infantry, trucks and vehicles with light armour. Meanwhile, the heavier MAM-L is capable of destroying main battle tanks.

About the TB2

The TB2 is undoubtedly the most famous drone in the world. In 2020 it emerged as a game-changer in three conflicts. First, it exacted a gruesome revenge on Assad’s forces after an airstrike that targeted Turkish troops. The counter-attack was released to the public in a 14-minute long video. Then it pushed back Haftar’s forces who were about to score a total victory in Libya. However, it was when Azerbaijan decimated Armenia’s well-motivated military in 44 days that the TB2 was brought to the world’s attention.

The TB2 is a medium-altitude long-endurance UCAV. It has an endurance of up to 27 hours depending on the configuration. It can be fitted with SATCOM (TB2S), as well as rapid mapping technology for the quick development of high-resolution maps. With a maximum take-off weight of 700kg, it is considered light for a MALE drone. Its combination of advanced subsystems, low RCS (depending on the angle) and budget-friendly price, have all contributed to its success.
